Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! Have you ever heard of “Gassho-style-architecture?” If yes, what’s your image about it? If you’ve heard about it, maybe the first thing you thought about is Shirakawa-go. Am I right? Then, how about our hometown, Gokayama? Today, we will take you on a night tour where you can enjoy a World Heritage Site Gokayama “Gassho-style-architecture.”
This place was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1995 and it’s called “Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama,” but sadly most Japanese people associate Gassho-style-architecture only with Shirakawa-go.
This graph shows the unpopularity of our hometown. The number visiting Gokayama was less than half compared with those visiting Shirakawa-go last year.
Furthermore, we conducted questionnaire on Facebook and got 120 answers in total including people from our hometown and people from other prefectures. As a result, we clearly find a gap. For the people in our hometown, Gokayama is most recommended tourism spot and they visited there as a school trip in elementary school. On the other hand, among people from other prefectures, only four people knew the existence of Gokayama. Moreover, two people mistake Gokayama for Shirakawa-go.
We want to gain the recognition of Gokayama as a historic village worth visiting and get you to actually visit Gokayama. That is why we are standing here today.
Welcome to Gokayama Night Tour!
As soon as you step off the bus, it seems like arriving in old Japan. You can enjoy amazing landscapes each seasons, and the best time to visit is definitely winter. Gokayama warmly welcomes you with rich snow and candles made by local people. If you ever visit, don’t forget to post some photos online for the entire world to see the fantastic landscape.
After taking some photos, you can check in your accommodation. Surprisingly, it’s Gassho-style-house. Staying at a World Heritage Site would be a once in a life experience. The architecture has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. You can discover the clever ways people used to build these houses, like its steep roof that helps shed snow easily.
Besides, the owner tells stories about history and lifestyle in Gokayama, like “How did the residents make a living in the snowy winter?” So, please don’t miss that chance to listen to their stories.
While sitting around “Irori,” which is Japanese traditional fireplace, you can enjoy the local dishes of Gokayama such as wild vegetables, local sake, tofu and char fish. Especially, Gokayama tofu is so hard that people metaphorically said, “It could be used as a pillow when sleeping.” You can try it only here, so don’t miss this chance.
Then, the highlight of the evening is Kokiriko [Japanese Song].
You can enjoy the live performance of Kokiriko that is registered as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Then, it’s your turn to dance and play the music instrument called “Sasara.”
We think Kokiriko is what makes Gokayama special compared to Shirakawa-go. Gokayama is said to be “a treasury of folk songs.” Its folk songs are a priceless heritage for the local community. They have been transmitted orally across generations and developed along with the culture, so when you visit Gokayama, you should not miss it. That’s why we included this song performance in our tour.
Being attracted by our tour, more and more people would feel like “I’d like to listen to truly Kokiriko and try Sasara in Gokayama.” As a result, Gokayama will become as famous as Shirakawa-go and attract many tourists. This is our tour benefit for this community.
But, carrying out our tour, we need to consider who performs this Kokiriko show. Then, we will collaborate with local Taira High School students. This high school is located near Gassho village and its local entertainment club students practice Gokayama folk song and dance. They got prize in all Japan competition, so you will most likely be impressed by the students’ high quality performance. We think it is important that we, young generation, preserve local tradition and spread it, so we can continue keeping our tradition alive.
In addition, the reason why we decided to collaborate with high school students instead of professional performer is to make opportunities for local students to communicate with people from all over the world in English. When we were high school students, there were few opportunities to use English practically in our rural area, and after entering university, we were shocked to realize the opportunity gap between countryside and cities. My friend from Tokyo has joined a lot of English competitions and my friend from Osaka had a choice to study abroad during high school days. The other friend from Kyoto had a chance to guide foreign tourists as a volunteer, but we had no experience like that. We wish we had got more chance to communicate in English. We often envied city friends for rich experience. Therefore, we want local students to take advantage of this tour to meet various people and expand their horizons. So, we choose high school students.
At last, we would like to mention the realizability of our tour. As for access, if you come from Tokyo, Hokuriku Shinkansen stops at Shin-takaoka Station, which is the closest Shinkansen station to Gokayama, so it is convenient. Meanwhile, if you are travelling on a budget, night bus is always your best choice.
The first meeting place is Shin-takaoka Station. Then, we will go to Gokayama together by bus, so please make sure you are at the station at 4 p.m. After enjoying our tour next morning, we have free time for sightseeing around Gokayama. We leave at 12:30, so please come at bus terminal on time. The total price of this tour is only ¥13,000 including accommodation with 2 meal, round-way bus fare and activity fee. As we mention, we are ready to put this tour into action soon.

皆さん、こんにちは！皆さんは「合掌造り」という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？聞いたことがあるなら、どういうイメージを持っていますか？聞いたことがある人が多分最初に思いつくのは白川郷ではないでしょうか？そうですよね？では、私の故郷にある五箇山はいかがでしょう？本日、世界遺産に登録された、五箇山の合掌造りを堪能できる、夜のツアーに皆さんをご案内します！
五箇山は、１９９５年、「白川郷・五箇山の合掌造り集落」の名で世界遺産に登録されました。しかし残念なことに、日本人の多くは合掌造りと聞くと白川郷を連想します。
このグラフから、私たちの故郷がいかに知られていないかがわかります。昨年五箇山に訪れた人の数は、白川郷を訪れた人数の半分にも満たないのです。
さらに、私たちは、富山県内外の人を対象にフェイスブックでアンケートを実施し、１２０もの回答を得ました。その結果、明らかなギャップを見つけました。富山県民は、五箇山を最もおすすめできる観光スポットと考えており、小学校の修学旅行では五箇山を訪れていました。一方、県外の人で五箇山の存在を知っているのはわずか４人でした。しかも、五箇山と白川郷を取り違えている人が２人いました。
私たちは、五箇山を訪れる価値のある歴史的な村として認めてもらい、実際に五箇山を訪れていただきたいと思っています。このような経緯から、本日私たちはこうして登壇させていただきました。
五箇山への夜のツアーへようこそ！
バスを降りた瞬間、古きよき時代の日本の地にやってきたように感じるでしょう。一年のどの季節でも驚くべき景色を堪能できますが、一番訪れるのにいい季節は間違いなく冬です。五箇山を訪れたあなたを、たくさんの雪と住民が作ったキャンドルが暖かく出迎えてくれます。もし訪れたら、この幻想的な風景を世界中の人々が見ることができるよう、忘れずに写真をネットにアップしてください。
写真を撮ったあとは、宿泊施設にチェックインできます。合掌造りの家に、ですよ！世界遺産の家に泊まるのは一生に一度の体験となるでしょう。この家の建築構造は、何百年間も変わっていません。これらの家々が、雪が落ちやすいように屋根の角度を急にするなど、いかに賢いやり方で建てられたかが分かるでしょう。
さらに、家のご主人が五箇山の歴史やライフスタイルについての話、例えば「どうやって住民は雪の積もる冬の間に生計を立てていたのか」というような話をしてくれます。住民の話を聞くチャンスを逃さないようにしてください。
日本の暖炉である「囲炉裏」の周りに座りながら、五箇山の地元料理を楽しめます。山菜、地酒、豆腐、イワナなどです。特筆すべきは五箇山豆腐で、これはとても硬く「寝るとき枕に使える」と言われるほどです。五箇山豆腐を食べられるのはここだけですのでお見逃しなく。
夕方時の見所はこきりこ（日本民謡）です。
無形文化資産に登録されている、こきりこのパフォーマンスを生で楽しむことができます。今度は、あなたが踊り、「ささら」と呼ばれる楽器を演奏する番です。
こきりこは、五箇山と白川郷の特徴をはっきり分けるものだと思います。五箇山は「民謡の宝庫」だと言われています。地元の人たちにとって五箇山の民謡はかけがえのない遺産です。五箇山の民謡は口頭で何世代にも渡って伝承され、文化と共に発達してきました。五箇山を訪れたら、必ず体験してみてくださいね。私たちがこきりこを今回のツアーに入れたのにはこういう理由があったのです。
私たちのツアーを気に入り、ますます多くの人が「五箇山で、こきりこを絶対聞いてみたい。ささらを演奏してみたい」と思ったかもしれません。そうすることで、五箇山は白川郷と同じぐらい有名になり、たくさんの観光客が訪れるようになります。私たちのツアーには、五箇山の発展に資するこうした利点があるのです。
しかし、私たちのツアーを実施するにあたり、誰がこきりこを行うのかについて考える必要があります。そこで、地元の平高等学校の学生に協力してもらうことにしました。この高校は合掌造りの村落の近くにあり、郷土芸能部の学生は五箇山の民謡や踊りを練習しています。全国大会で賞を取ったこともあり、学生たちの質の高いパフォーマンスに感動するでしょう。私たち若い世代が地元の伝統を守り、広め、伝統を受け継いでいくことが重要だと考えます。
さらに、私たちがプロのパフォーマーではなく高校生と組もうと考えた理由は、地元の学生たちに世界中の人々と英語で交流する機会を与えたかったからです。私たちが高校生だった頃、私たちの地元には英語を実際に使う機会がほとんどありませんでした。そして大学入学後、地方と都市部では英語を使用する機会に大きな隔たりがあることが驚きでした。私の東京出身の友人は、多くの英語コンテストに出場していました。私の大阪出身の友人は高校時代に海外留学するチャンスがありました。他の京都出身の友人はボランティアで外国人観光客を案内するチャンスがありました。しかし、私たちにはこのような経験がありませんでした。私たちにもっと英語でコミュニケーションをとるチャンスが与えられていたらよかったのにと思っています。私たちは、豊富な経験を積める都会の友人をよくうらやましく思います。だから、地元の学生たちには今回のツアーを活用して様々な人々と会い、視野を広げてほしいと願っています。以上が、私たちが高校生を選んだ理由です。
最後に、私たちのツアーの現実性についてご説明します。アクセスについては、東京から来る場合、北陸新幹線が、新幹線が止まる駅の中で五箇山に最も近い駅である新高岡駅に止まりますので、使い勝手がいいです。一方、予算に限りがある方は、夜行バスを使うのが常にベストな選択でしょう。
最初の集合場所は新高岡駅です。そこから、バスで五箇山に向かいます。なので午後４時には駅にいるようにしてください。私たちのツアーが翌日の朝で終わると、五箇山付近を観光する自由時間があります。１２時３０分に出発しますから、その時間までにバス停に来てください。ツアーの合計料金は、一泊二日の食事付宿泊代、往復バス料金とアクティビティの料金を含み、わずか１万３０００円です。以上の通り、このツアーはすぐにでも実現することができます。
私たちの話を聞いて、皆さんが五箇山を次の旅行目的地に選んでくれることを願っています。記憶に残る思い出が作れますように。
