Good evening ladies and gentlemen! When I say good evening, I remember one of the themes, nocturnal entertainment in places. In Tokyo, there are different kinds of entertainment, but I shouldn’t go into that. Let me make 3 points firstly about the ideas expressed, secondly about the presentational skills, and thirdly specifically about questions and answers.
You may know what TED is all about; this exercise where you spread ideas worth spreading. From that point of view, this has been a very interesting experience because we heard some very interesting, some very innovative ideas.
Actually, there was one particularly - I want to say appetizing idea, perhaps some people find it otherwise, I was fascinated, but I wasn’t quite sure whether I would try this idea in the presence of my wife. But, covering a number of areas like places to visit at night and environmental education and Asian specialty and so forth.
What impressed me most was that they were original ideas expressed - original ideas that obtained partly from the multinational nature of this contest because there were some representatives of Asian countries in particular and I think, it is the mix of the cultures that gave rise to some original and interesting ideas.
Secondly about the presentational skills, I’ve been impressed again by the high level of presentational skills both in terms of the English language, but also in terms of other presentational skills, like the use of the slides and so forth. As far as the English language proficiency is concerned, some contestants manifested a very sophisticated high proficiency of English. Some other didn’t, but did manage to convey their ideas very forcefully through the strength of their commitment and passion and that I think is a very important factor.
In many of the presentations, we’ve felt the speakers’ love for the place that they were talking about, also their love for the children and so forth, and love for places where they don’t actually come from, but they took the trouble to visit places, with which they familiarized themselves. All that was very impressive.
Thirdly, specifically about questions and answers, because as a judge, actually I learned quite a lot, from hearing the questions being asked by the audience, especially the students. Actually for us judges, asking questions is a very difficult business because you may be thinking what a stupid question that judge is asking. We are afraid of criticisms, but this idea of engagement with the audience through questions and answers, I think is a very important thing because when you step out in the real world, you can’t just stand and speak as lopsided traffic. You have to engage in dialogue with the audience and this idea of welcoming questions from the audience is very good for the contestants and also for the students because people are listening to the questions and I think they are judging the questions as well.
So, those are my overall comments. This is the 5th contest that I am judging and I’m very happy to have had this experience again.

今回初めての審査員として、皆様のプレゼンテーションをたいへん楽しませていただきました。私は仕事柄、様々なセミナーや会議にお邪魔しますが、たくさんの日本人が英語でコミュニケーションをする場において、これほど活発な質疑応答がなされたのは初めてです。スピーチをされる方々の熱意と自信溢れる発表に加えて、発表をしっかり聞いて理解しようという聴衆の皆さんの熱意も感じました。また、プレゼンターの皆さんが内容をよく調べ、地域について発表する場合には地域への愛情を持って語られていることも印象的でした。
一つだけアドバイスをするとしたら、誰を対象としてプランを考えているのか、もう少し絞り込むとさらにわかりやすくなると思います。このような素晴らしい舞台で発表されたことが皆様の大きな自信になり、グローバルに活躍することを心から祈っております。
Good evening everyone! I am from New York City, so I am going to be very brief with my comments for you all. What I really want to say to the contestants is you showed so much skill, so much poise, so much innovation, creativity and I really appreciate you all allowing me to be here to judge you all. It was really a great experience for me. On behalf of the embassy, what I would like to convey to everyone here is come study abroad in the United States. There are so many programs where you will strengthen your English, but I mean you are also already so capable and just so skilled in the language, I was blown away. So, thank you so much and gambatte-kudasai!
受賞者の皆様、おめでとうございます。また今日この場にいらっしゃるすべての方々についても、勇気を持ってこのコンテストに挑戦されたことは大いに賞賛に値するものと思います。皆さんのプレゼンテーションを聞いて、ほぼ完成形に近いのではないかというのが私の印象です。
皆さんは、これからもいろいろな場面でプレゼンテーションをされていくことになると思います。今回は３つのテーマが設定され、皆さんはその一つを選択された訳ですが、これからは、自ら課題を見つけて行くことが求められると思います。よくイノベーションは身近な問題に好奇心を抱くことがきっかけで始まるといいます。是非とも興味深い課題を見つけ、今日のように素晴らしいプレゼンテーションに挑戦してほしいと思います。
いいプレゼンテーションをするには、その内容について、とことん議論を重ねることがキーになると思います。そのためには、同僚や仲間と議論をぶつけ合うことが極めて大切です。また、異なる文化圏から来た人々と意見を戦わせることも大きな意味を持ってきます。ダイバーシティということの重要性を今一度考えてみて下さい。これからも社会にインパクトを与えるような素晴らしいプレゼンテーションをしていっていだたきたいと思います。
Good evening. I would like to add my congratulations to all of the contestants. I have been very impressed by the quality here today and one of the main things that has left an impression on me - as the other judges have also conveyed - is the passion that you all have for your individual proposals and projects. You also focused on an important point: making use of your research and your creative ability to get people on board with your passion. I think you all did that really well, and this is a really good example of not just English proficiency, but also getting people involved with the projects that you have in mind. So, I would like to encourage you to continue on that path of being creative and innovative and also confident in conveying your ideas to the world. I wish you all the best.

Good evening everybody! So, at my company Chugai Pharmaceutical, we place great importance on passion, vision, and integrity, and I believe all of our speakers tonight demonstrated these values in their speeches. You demonstrated passion with the way you so energetically delivered your proposals, you demonstrated vision with the way you so eloquently described the objectives of your proposals, and you also demonstrated integrity with the way that you are very conscious of things like environmental factors and how your proposal could be sustainably developed in the long term.
In short, I think that you are all ideal candidates to join my company and I will be giving you my business card later on tonight. But joking aside, I think as you know the Japanese corporate sector needs to seriously reform going forwards, but I am confident that with people like you working for companies like mine that we can reform going forward in the future. So, I wish you all the very best with your job-hunting activities and I ask that you continue to maintain your passion, your vision, and your integrity after you join your future place of employment.
私は大学時代に米国・ボストンに一年間留学し、入社後は岐阜県高山市にある弊社のリゾートホテル『高山桜庵』で８ヶ月間勤務をしていました。高山は多くの外国人が訪れる観光地で、ホテルの宿泊客の３分の１は海外からのお客様です。ほぼ毎日英語で接客をすることになり「留学して英語を勉強しておいてよかった！」と心から思いました。皆さんも卒業後は英語を生かせる業種や職種に就くことを検討されているかと思います。私がお伝えしたいのは、どのような職についても、大学時代に身に付けた英語は無駄にならないということです。これからさらに国際色豊かになる環境の中、英語力や国際感覚はますます必要とされていくことでしょう。皆様の今後のご活躍を心よりお祈りしております。
今回の英語プレゼンテーションコンテストのテーマは、我々が日頃のビジネスで考えている「持続可能な社会・環境に配慮する」ことそのままです。皆さんがこの先社会人になられたときに、このコンテストに参加したことで得た貴重な学びをぜひ活かしてほしいです。我々も今、地方創生という日本の地域社会の活性化と、海外事業では主に中国・東南アジアの国々の発展に貢献していくという２つのミッションを持ってビジネスを展開しています。そこには多種多様な価値観やバックボーンを持った方々が活躍する場が広がっています。皆さんにもこれから日本人として、外国籍の方々はそれぞれの国の代表として、グローバルに活躍してほしいと思います。頑張ってください。
皆さんの中には将来海外で活躍したい、国際的な仕事をしたいと思われている方が多いかと思います。我々も約６０年前から海外に進出し、メキシコを中心とした中南米、中国を中心とした東アジア、ベトナム、インド、ドバイなど現在もエリアを拡大しながら実績を残してきました。ＫＤＤＩの創始者でもある京セラの稲盛和夫氏の名言の中に私の好きな言葉がありますので、これを私からのはなむけとして皆さんに贈りたいと思います。「今日の成果は過去の努力の結果であり、未来はこれからの努力で決まる」。みなさんは今日まで相当な努力をしてきたことでしょう。今日までの努力と、今日の成果は必ず皆さんの成長の糧となります。これからも努力を惜しまず精一杯頑張ってほしいと思います。
近年ＡＩなどのテクノロジーが大きく進化をしています。これからの金融サービスは、正確な事務処理は機械に任せ、その分の力をお客さまの夢や希望を実現する提案に注ぐことになるでしょう。皆さんが学んでいる英語も同じです。近い将来自動翻訳が大きく進展しても、インパーソンで何を伝えるのかがとても大事になると思います。皆さんがこの場に至るまでに培った語学力、実行力、表現力、発信力は、これからの人生においても大きな力になります。次の世代を作るのは皆さんです。チャーリー・チャップリンは「あなたの最高傑作はなんですか？」と問われ、「The next one.」と言ったそうです。可能性は常に未来にあります。これからもたゆまぬ学びと研鑽を続けてください。
