What is your favorite subject? Math? Science? Last semester, when I did my internship at Osaka Minami Junior High School, to support the students, the same question was asked by a little girl. So I said “environment.” She asked me back “environment?”
In our country - Sri Lanka, we have a subject called “environment,” which teaches us about nature. We learned various environmental problems as well as solutions. It was the time we were directly involved in solving the problems as well as the solutions. We did many practical activities, too. Also, we realized our responsibilities towards the nature and be active.
While working with the students at Osaka Minami Junior High School, we saw that although they learn about environmental problems and solutions, they do not have a chance to take action. Because of that, we decided to create a project called “Ecology,” not just to teach about the environment, but also to change our lifestyle in significant ways to protect our environment.
Specifically, Ecology project will cover three areas: Air, land, and water.
Today, in here, we will do our first workshop in water section. It’s about ocean plastic pollution. This is a 1-day workshop, but remember, it’s learning with hands-on activities.
Before we start, take a look here. Wow, seafood! It makes me hungry. What about you? So, how about this? Many kinds of plastics on your plate as your breakfast? Can you imagine? Unfortunately, this is the reality of the future. This is the worst effect of ocean plastic pollution.
Ocean is the place that 70% of oxygen that we breathe comes from and 97% of our water comes from. But researchers estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. The top three items which we found in the ocean is food wrappers and containers, plastic bottles and also plastic bags.
Take a look at here. See how hard these sea animals are struggling to survive with plastics. Nearly 100,000 mammals die every year because of the plastic waste. So, who is responsible for these innocent lives? It’s you, its’ me, yes all of us. The plastic we use every day is ending like this.
So, what are the solutions for this? Probably, you might think it is recycling. But unfortunately, you are wrong. If we recycle, plastic could downcycle into lower grade and finally it comes to a stage that cannot be recycled anymore. Because of that, we found an amazing solution, called “Eco bricks.” This is a real example for an eco brick which we made. This is a plastic bottle that is filled with lot of nondisposable plastic waste, which we use daily.
Making an eco brick is not too difficult. Actually it is so easy. All you need are three things: Same kind of plastic bottles, many nondisposable plastic waste and a strong stick. Then you must fill the bottle with these garbages and dig as much as you can until it becomes a strong brick like this.
But it is important to maintain the quality of the eco bricks. As you can see here, if it is a big bottle, it is okay to weight around 600 grams, but if it is a small bottle like this, it is okay to weight around 200 grams.
Actually, we can make many models by using this eco bricks, which can be used for many years and environmentally friendly. It can be a little vase on your desk, the chair you sit or big construction like a house.
So, coming back to the beginning, along with this great idea, let us introduce our 1-day workshop called “ONE: Ocean and Eco Bricks.”
Our goals for this workshop are, learn about ocean plastic pollution, introduce and make eco bricks.
As we mentioned before, our participants will be junior high school students. Along with them, there will be university students to support the event and also organize the event.
With our last experience with the internship, we are convinced that the junior high school is the best place to interact with the students. Also, they have the energy and curiosity towards everything. On the other hand, we want to make a strong bond between university students and junior high school students to protect our environment.
Therefore, 2 weeks before the workshop, we ask every student to collect many nondisposable plastic waste and bring them to the workshop. In addition, our team will supply some materials like plastic bottles, sticks and so on.
In the morning session, we will talk about the problem - ocean plastic pollution. Next, we will step into the solutions as well as the introduction of eco bricks. Then, we will give basic instruction for making an eco brick.
But, how can we make this program interesting? As we said before, this is learning with hands-on activities. So, in the afternoon session, we will ask every student to make their own bricks with the materials or the garbage which they bring and the stuff which we supply.
When they finish, they have to write their own vision towards protecting the oceans. They have to be creative and original. Finally, we will choose the best eco brick with the quality and the best vision of the day.
So, in last, we want to connect this workshop to our next workshop also. So, in the last of this workshop, we will give a challenge to every kid to collect as many garbage and make their own bricks until our next workshop. So, in the next workshop, we will collect all those eco bricks and use for our next model making in next workshop.
All in all, we want the children to realize the simple thing we use every day can be the cause of ocean plastic pollution. The next time when they buy a plastic bottle, think a minute and be the one who saves the ocean by making eco bricks. On the other hand, starting from the ONE, we believe that the children will be more sensitive towards the nature and save it for the future. Finally, we want your support for making this a reality. 皆さんの好きな教科は何ですか？数学？科学？先学期、大阪市立南中学校に学生のサポート役としてインターンに行ってきました。その時、ある小さな女の子に同じ質問を聞かれたので、「環境」と答えたところ、彼女に「環境？」と聞き返されました。
私たちの国、スリランカには、「環境」と呼ばれる教科があります。この教科では自然について学びます。私たちは様々な環境問題や解決方法について学びました。そして直接環境問題の解決や解決方法に関わりました。実践活動も多く行いました。そして自然に対する私たちの責任を理解し、活動を展開しています。
大阪市立南中学校の学生たちと関わっている間、学生たちは環境問題や解決方法について学んでいるものの、行動に移す機会がないことに気づきました。このため、私たちは「エコロジー」と呼ばれるプロジェクトを立ち上げることに決めました。このプロジェクトは、ただ環境について教えるだけではなく、私たちのライフスタイルを大きく変えることで環境を保護することを目的としたものです。
具体的に言うと、エコロジープロジェクトは３つのセクションに分けられます。空気、土地、そして水です。
本日は、水セクションについて初のワークショップをここで開催したいと思います。海洋プラスチック汚染についてです。このワークショップは１日制ですが、実践的な活動を取り入れた学習だということを忘れないでください。
ワークショップを始める前に、これを見てください。シーフードです！これを見ると、私、おなかが減ってしまいます。皆さんはどうですか？では、これはどうでしょう？皆さんの朝食のお皿に、色々な種類のプラスチックが置かれています。想像できますか？残念ながら、これが将来本当に起きてしまうのです。これが、海洋プラスチック汚染の最悪の影響なのです。
私たちが吸う酸素の７０％と私たちの水９７％は海洋から来ています。しかし、研究者によれば、２０５０年までに、海洋にあるプラスチックの数は魚の数を超えてしまうと推定されています。私たちが海洋で発見したもののトップ３は、ラップおよび包装容器、ペットボトル、そしてビニール袋です。
これを見てください。これらの海洋動物がプラスチックのせいでどんなに生きるのに苦しんでいることか。毎年、プラスチックごみが原因で、およそ１０万頭の哺乳動物が死んでいます。これら罪のない命に対し責められるべきは誰でしょうか。それは、あなたであり、私であり、私たち全員です。私たちが日々使っているプラスチックは、動物たちを死に至らしめているのです。
では、これを解決するには何をすればよいでしょう？リサイクルでしょうか。しかし残念ながら、それは間違いです。リサイクルをしても、プラスチックの品質が下がり、最終的には二度とリサイクルできなくなってしまいます。このため、私たちは「エコブリック」と呼ばれる、驚くべき解決方法を発見しました。これは、私たちが作ったエコブリックの実例です。私たちが毎日使う、使い捨てでない大量のプラスチックごみが詰まったペットボトルです。
エコブリックを作るのはそう難しくありません。事実、とても簡単です。必要なものは３つだけです。同じ種類のペットボトル、使い捨てでない大量のプラスチックごみ、そして硬い棒です。ペットボトルをごみで一杯にし、このような硬いエコブリックができるまでできるだけ強く押し詰めます。
しかしエコブリックの質を維持するのも重要です。ご覧のように、大きなペットボトルであれば、６００ｇ程度の重さまで可能でしょうが、このような小さなペットボトルとなると、２００ｇ程度までが限度でしょう。
実際、私たちは、何年も使用でき、環境にも優しいエコブリックを使って、いろいろなものを作ることができます。皆さんの机の上の小さな花瓶、皆さんが座るいす、あるいは家のような建築物にもなるかもしれません。
では本題に戻りましょう。このすばらしいアイデアを使いながら、私たちの１日制ワークショップ「ＯＮＥ：海洋とエコブリック」についてご紹介いたします。
このワークショップの目的は、海洋プラスチック汚染について学び、エコブリックを紹介し、作ることです。
以前申し上げたとおり、参加者は中学生です。さらに、イベントのサポート役・牽引役として大学生が参加します。
私たちは、直近のインターンシップの経験から、中学校は学生たちと交流するのに理想的な場だと確信しました。さらに、学生たちはあらゆることに対してエネルギーと好奇心を持っています。一方、私たちは、環境を保護するために、大学生と中学生の間に強い絆が生まれることも望んでいます。
ですから、ワークショップの２週間前になったら、学生全員に使い捨てでない大量のプラスチックごみを収集してもらい、ワークショップに持ってきてもらいます。さらに、ペットボトルや棒などの道具は私たちが配布します。
午前の部で、私たちは海洋プラスチック汚染の問題についてお話します。次に解決法とエコブリックの紹介に移ります。そしてエコブリックの基本的な作り方を教えます。
しかし、どうやったらこの企画を面白いものにできるでしょう？私たちが以前申し上げたとおり、これは実践的な活動を取り入れた学習です。なので午後の部では、学生たちが持参した道具やごみと、私たちが配布するものを使って、学生たち全員に彼ら自身のエコブリックを作ってもらいます。
それが終わったら、学生たちには海洋保護に対する自身のビジョンについて文章を書いてもらいます。彼らはクリエイティブで独創的でなければなりません。最後に、私たちが、その日最も質がよかったエコブリックと、最もよかったビジョンを選出します。
そして最後に、私たちは今回のワークショップを次回のワークショップにもつなげたいのです。なので、ワークショップの最後に、次回までに子供たちになるべく多くのごみを集め、彼ら自身のエコブリックを作ってくるよう課題を出します。そして、次回のワークショップですべてのエコブリックを回収し、次回のワークショップで作るモデルに使用します。
結論として、私たちが日々使っている取るに足らないものが、海洋プラスチック汚染の原因となりうることを子供たちに理解してもらいたいのです。今度ペットボトルを買うときに、少し考えて、エコブリックを作って海を救ってください。一方、「ＯＮＥ：海洋とエコブリック」を通じて、子供たちが自然のことをより深く考え、将来のために守ってくれることを信じています。最後に、これを実現するために皆さんのサポートが必要です。「ＯＮＥ：海洋とエコブリック」に奮ってご参加ください。
