Foundation of the Global Water Research Center

The Institute of Science and Engineering was founded in 1992 with a view to contributing to the promotion of strategic research activities by researchers in the field of science and engineering. On April 1, 2014, the Research Center for Global Water Environment and Water Disaster Information (referred hereafter as “Center” ) was established as an attached center which promotes the research on the adaptation measures in the field of civil engineering using the Archive related to global water environment and water disaster information.

The main activities of the center are three, namely, (1) As the first "Archive Center for Global Water Environment and Water Disaster Information" in Japan, to carry out information dissemination to other countries,(2) Nurturing the water environment and the water disaster special researcher who can play an active part in the international society, and (3) To promote the research on the adaptation measures in the field of civil engineering using the most advanced information on global water environment and water disaster.
Researches will be conducted under the whole participation of the teaching staff of the civil and environmental engineering major, Graduate School of Science and Engineering as well as cooperation with the domestic relevant ministries, agencies, societies and research institutes which the major has already made fine relationships.

In addition, the Center is closely related to the Program for Capacity Building in Global Water-Environmental Engineering (referred hereafter as “Program”) which the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology established in 2010 as a central activity of “developing highly skilled professionals through the exchange with universities of Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and other countries” (now known as “Campus Asia” central support projects). The outline of the activity states that (1) The program supports the researcher’s capacity building in the water environment and water disaster field, (2) Information dissemination and research support are obtained from partner universities of China, South Korea Vietnam and Thailand, and (3) Two students who completed the “global water environmental engineering sub-major” (now “global water environment course”) as the first and the second students of the Program (one Japanese student and one overseas student), participate in a research team as associate- researchers. The strong business performance of the Program is also beneficial for various activities of the center.
