On Thursday November 14, Professor Colin B. Picker, Associate Dean of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) visited Chuo.
Known as the Law School of Asia, UNSW boasts a talented network of graduates worldwide, centered around Asia.
Professor Picker spoke to the Chuo students about “Studying Law in Australia,” and gave them advice on their possible future academic decisions.

Professor Picker began the lecture by giving the students an idea of how the Australian legal system originated from the British Law which was then applied a similar idea to the US constitution. After a brief introduction to the education system in Australian law, Professor Picker mentioned various programs which UNSW focuses on, such as interactive and small classes, internship courses at law firms, overseas exchange programs, and moot court camps. UNSW Law was ranked 12th in the world according to the QS World University rankings 2013.

Australia’s economy has been growing for the past 20 years. With a population of 23 million, there are 37 law schools and growing.
The people who live in Sydney are diverse, which makes the city a major legal center, accounting for its growing participation in international law.

As a closing statement, Professor Picker gave a very clear message to the students.
“Study overseas and learn more through cultural differences by taking various opportunities provided by the university. The more difficult the challenges you are faced with, the more you will grow.”

The session ended after an active Q&A, including questions about job placement in the current law market in Australia.
