Center for Research and Development Initiatives Professor Shoji Fukuoka, research leader of the Basin and River Management Technology Research Project, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award and Research Achievement Award at the 2012 JSCE Awards held at the JSCE General Assembly on June 14, 2013.

Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award was established in 1965 as an award for enterprises and achievements, where the results of civil engineering technology greatly contribute to social or academic culture development. This Distinguished Service Award is presented to society members who have been seen to greatly contribute to the improvement of civil engineering, growth of civil engineering enterprises, and management of the society.
Reason for award
Along with endeavoring to develop advanced learning and technology and attempting to solve major waterway planning and management issues in river engineering, as President of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Panel of Infrastructure Development, Professor Fukuoka has greatly contributed to the promotion of infrastructure development in Japan.
For the above reasons, Professor Fukuoka was deemed worthy of receiving the Distinguished Service Award.
Research Achievement Award
The Research Achievement Award is, as a rule, presented to individuals who greatly contribute to academic and technological improvement and systematization in civil engineering through the results of a series of essays relating to research, planning, design, execution and invention etc., that have been published in the JSCE Magazines, Journals of JSCE, or other JSCE publications.
