Daiki Tomita, a 2nd year student in Master's Program at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering (major in applied chemistry; Komatsu Laboratory) received the Poster Award at the 62nd Debate Session of the Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry. The session featured presentations for a total of 472 posters. After passing through strict judging, Tomita's poster presentation was selected and awarded for its outstanding content.

Oxygen carrier heme protein (hemoglobin-albumin) cluster

[Research details]
Precision synthesis was performed for a cluster (hemoglobin-albumin) which binds several albumins (blood plasma protein) onto the molecular surface of hemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen within an organism. By doing so, the research clarified the structure and oxygen binding ability of the cluster. This new oxygen carrier heme protein is expected to be used as an artificial red blood cell. In addition to chemistry applications, the research is attracting great attention from the pharmaceutical and medical fields.
