Kanto Inter-University Athletics

At the 91st Kanto Inter-University Athletics Championships (hosted by the Inter-University Athletic Union of Kanto) held at Tokyo's National Stadium for four days over two weeks, the efforts of our women's track team stood out. Eight athletes in six events became number one in Kanto.

On the third day (May 19th), in the women's 5000m, Mai Shinozuka (2nd year student in the Faculty of Commerce) won in a time of 16 minutes 4.24 seconds, to add to her victory in the 10,000m on the opening day (12th), to capture the long distance double for the second year running.

On the same day, the women's 400m relay team of Mami Takahashi (3rd year student in the Faculty of Letters),Satomi Sugawara (3rd year student in the Faculty of Policy Studies), Tamaka Shimizu (3rd year student in the Faculty of Letters), and Manami Kira (3rd year student in the Faculty of Commerce), won in a time of 46.08 seconds. In the long jump, Tamaka Shimizu finished in first place with a tournament record of 6m 48cm.

On the final day (May 20th), the women's 400m hurdles was won by Tomomi Yoneda (4th year student in the Faculty of Letters) in a time of 57.43 seconds. Suzuka Akai (4th year student in the Faculty of Letters) topped the heptathlon standings with a total of 5208 points.

In the men's competition, Shota Iizuka (3rd year student in the Faculty of Law) won the 100m in 10.40 seconds, making up for his second place finish in the same event last year.

At the championships, about 1800 competitors from 155 schools competed in 23 men's events and 21 women's events.
