Faculty of Science and Engineering Professor Tomomi Matsui and Shigeki Toriumi (both of the Information and Systems Engineering Department), have been awarded by the Operations Research Society of Japan for their research findings. The pair was presented certificates by the president at the awards ceremony of the ORSJ 2011 Fall Research Forum held at Konan University on September 16. An outline of the awards is below.
The Case Study Award is awarded to three studies a year selected from individuals, groups or companies who have conducted outstanding operations research case studies.
What is operations research?
A science that researches techniques employed to mathematically model problems that occur in companies etc. and create methods to solve them for the purpose of problem solving. There are various types of mathematical techniques employed such as optimization and probability models, and game theory. There are many companies which have an Operations Research division.
