Graduated from Faculty of Education and Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, University of Tokyo in 1971. Joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan in 1972. Posts include Ambassador, UNESCO; Chief Negotiator for international trade negotiations under the Doha Development Agenda of World Trade Organization and for the Japan-Chile Economic Partnership Agreement; First Director-General, Department of Public Diplomacy; Director-General, Department of Cultural Exchanges; Deputy Secretary-General, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris; Deputy Director-General, Economic Affairs Bureau; Counselor for Public Affairs then Minister, Embassy of Japan in Washington; Ambassador to Denmark; and Commissioner, Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan.
