- Born in London in 1952. Majored in British literature at the Exeter College of Oxford University. Entered the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1975. Placed in charge of Japanese and East Asia affairs and worked in offices in both Tokyo and London. From 1991, he was stationed for two years as International Director at the Cabinet Office Science and Technology Agency. During this period, supervised scientific technological cooperation between England and Japan.
Assumed his current position of British Ambassador to Japan in July 2008.
