To commemorate the 125th anniversary of Chuo University in 2010, the Faculty of Letters will hold an exhibition of Ukiyo-e masterpieces from the Hiraki collection at the Tobacco and Salt Museum, in cooperation with the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Museum, an establishment with close ties to Chuo University.

This world-renowned Ukiyo-e collection, the Hiraki collection, contains numerous important cultural assets and works of art. The exhibit will bring together numerous works, many considered to be precious gems which Japan takes pride in on an international level, as well as selected works rarely displayed in public. As well as ukiyo-e, the exhibit includes fine examples of printing blocks used in the production of picture books that comprise part of the Hiraki collection.

The cultural heritage of ukiyo-e will be looked at from a contemporaneous point of view as well as from historical perspectives on culture and society, and be reevaluated in their cultural and historical sense. We hope that you will enjoy this luxuriously themed exhibition, made possible only through the abundance of masterpieces from various eras, artists, and genres stored in the Hiraki collection.
