Waseda Global Gate and Waseda International Learning Lounge
Two new facilities to promote international exchange and study abroad

In April 2014, Waseda University opened the new Waseda Global Gate (Building No. 22, 1F) and the Waseda International Learning Lounge (WILL, Building No. 22, 3F).

In Waseda Vision 150, the strategic plan for 2032, the 150th anniversary of the school’s founding, Waseda University has set the goals of having all undergraduate students study abroad and accepting 10,000 international students to the school. In order to realize this goal, Waseda is now taking a variety of actions to further enhance learning opportunities. For example, all students are encouraged to experience the world outside Japan by showing them the appeal and breadth of international education. Furthermore, Waseda provides English-language degree programs for international students, support for Japanese-language education, assistance in understanding Japanese culture, and opportunities for interaction with Japanese students. The two newly-opened facilities will serve as a core for international exchange which focuses on autonomous learning.

The Waseda Global Gate was created to provide information, advice and help with procedures related to overseas study, as well as to serve as a center for active learning. The office is open weekdays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm (4:00 pm on school holidays). Reservations are not required, so students can consult on study abroad at their convenience.

The facility includes a free space where consultation days are held in summer and autumn by student advisors who have experience studying overseas. Materials from foreign affiliated schools and notes on study abroad are also available for students to read. The office also contains two seminar rooms (capacity: 36 people each) which are used for lessons in the international student short-term study program, including the Summer Session, a program which utilizes the quarterly term structure.

The Waseda International Learning Lounge (WILL), on the 3rd floor of Building No. 22, was created as a place for all Waseda students, faculty and staff across different nationalities, languages, schools and perspectives to foster mutual understanding which overcomes barriers. The Lounge also promotes group study, autonomous learning and research exchange. WILL features whiteboards, discussion space, counters for individual work, Wi-Fi access and microwave ovens. The Lounge is open from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, offering a space for work and discussion while also eating and drinking.

Students from the Graduate School of Japanese Applied Linguistics provide individual support tailored to the needs of international students and researchers at the University. Waseda Japanese Language Support fulfills three main roles: 1) advising on Japanese language study, 2) providing information on Japanese language learning materials, and 3) guidance on Japanese language questions. Help is offered in the afternoon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
