- Recognition of his efforts in protection of the global environment -

Gore gives speaks passionately to students.

On November 19th at Okuma Auditorium, Waseda University presented an Honorary Doctoral Degree to Al Gore, the 45th Vice-President of the United States of America. The degree was presented in recognition of his record of continuing to warn the world about the problem of global warming, as well as his efforts in protection of the global environment. Gore stated that "I consider it a great honor to receive this award from Waseda University, an institution which has produced many individuals who have made contributions to the world". Gore gave a keynote lecture at the Global Summit for Ecology, which was held on the same day as the presentation of the Honorary Doctoral Degree. This summit addresses global environmental problems, providing a forum for dialogue between environmental protection groups and corporations from throughout the world. In addition to his speaking at the summit, Gore also gave a special version of his "An Inconvenient Truth" lecture in order to commemorate the presentation of the Honorary Doctoral Degree.

At both domestic and international political venues, Gore has continued to present the dangers faced by the global environment. He has dove into the Arctic Ocean in a submarine, flown to the Antarctic research base, and given reports on the current status of decreased biodiversity from the Amazon Rainforest. The students who packed the auditorium were able to directly feel Gore's sharp insights and unyielding beliefs, and they gave a large round of applause to Gore.

As Gore has done, Waseda seeks to overcome the issues raised in "Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit" and "An Inconvenient Truth". In order to achieve this goal, Waseda is working to create new environmental studies that are based on the spirit of enterprise and span specialized scholastic fields. Waseda also continues to develop a number of environmental projects.
