International Student Dormitory: Cultivating global leaders

Recently, the educational function of student dormitories is being reevaluated. In conjunction with the completion of the Tanashi Student Dormitory in 2008, Waseda University has renewed the management of student dormitories. As part of student support services provided by our university, we have focused on programs which promote student growth and which encourage interaction between Japanese and foreign students. Moreover, a student dormitory which will house approximately 900 Japanese and foreign students is currently being constructed in Nakano Ward. This article explores the future of student dormitories.

Introducing a student dormitory with attention to the finest details!

Waseda University introduces a various types of student dormitories for new students. In addition to student dormitories which are managed directly by our university, there are also dormitories for Waseda students which are managed by corporations that specialize in dormitory management.

Tanashi Student Dormitory

Completed in 2008, Tanashi Student Dormitory contains 132 rooms and can house 168 students. Dormitory rooms are furnished and include a unit bathroom. A LAN line is also available. Floors are divided by gender. In particular, floors for female students have automatic locks and offer high security management. The dormitory houses a total of 7 RAs (Resident Assistants) and Jr. RAs are positioned on each floor in order to support student life in the dormitory.

Students living in the dormitory are required to participate in the unique Social Intelligence (SI) Program, which seeks to produce global leaders. Many foreign students live in the dormitory and inter-cultural exchange other than the SI Program is also possible.
*As a general rule, Jr. RAs are 2nd-year students and are candidates for becoming RAs.

Ichijima Memorial Sendagi Student Dormitory

Ichijima Memorial Sendagi Student Dormitory is a women-only dormitory that was completed in 2000. It was built on land donated by the Late Shin Ichijima, who was a Distinguished Donor of Waseda University and a descendant of Kenkichi Ichijima, the first Director of Waseda University Library. The dormitory contains 11 rooms and houses 11 students. All of the rooms are studio-style and contain a mini-kitchen, unit bathroom, toilet and space for an indoor washing machine.
*RAs are not positioned at this dormitory.

Higashi-Fushimi Student Dormitory

Since its opening in 1990, the Higashi-Fushimi Student Dormitory has produced a large number of graduates. In 2007, the dormitory was reformed and started as a new student dormitory. The Higashi-Fushimi area is surrounded by greenery and traditionally the home of Waseda University sports teams. This men-only dormitory has 30 rooms and houses 40 students. Each floor is equipped with a shared kitchen.

There is a great amount of interaction among dormitory students. In May, they watch the Waseda-Keio baseball game together and a nagashi somen (flowing somen noodle) event is held in August. Monthly meeting of dormitory students, which is called "Fushi Meeting," is also held.

Supporting a meaningful student life

At Tanashi Student Dormitory, all dormitory students follow rules for a shared lifestyle. Students grow everyday by acquiring social skills and structured living habits, all while considering others. We help students spend a meaningful university life by improving their humanity together with many new friends who are also living away from home. We also help dormitory students live safely and with peace of mind.

I remember one new dormitory student who started crying when he couldn't perform settings for his computer after moving in. I celebrated together with that student when he successfully completed a 100-kilometer hike. There was also a time when a foreign student living in the dormitory became sick. Another foreign student living on the same floor quickly reported the illness and rode together in the ambulance. He even explained the symptoms to the patient's parents in their home country. He was a truly dependable student.

Together with current dormitory students, alumni and many other related individuals, I hope to create an even more vibrant dormitory, including the new SI Program.

Operation/management of student dormitories advances through cooperation with universities

Currently, student dormitories are undergoing a great transformation. One reason for this transformation is that, in response to a declining birthrate in Japan, universities are now accepting more students from different regions in Japan and from overseas. There are high needs for economical and safe student dormitories where students can live with peace of mind. Recent student dormitories mainly consist of single rooms which offer privacy, and there is a decrease in shared rooms. A full range of facilities is offered and the old image of small, old dormitory rooms no longer exists. On the other hand, these new dormitories still have shared cafeterias and bathrooms, just like traditional dormitories. These shared spaces fulfill an important role as places for communication between dormitory students. Survey results have shown that students living in dormitories have a smoother transition to university lifestyle than students living alone. Another element contributing to the popularity of dormitories are activities such as welcome parties and seasonal events for interaction within the dormitory.

Another feature of dormitories is support for the autonomous life of students. A dormitory leader or dormitory mother lives in the dormitory, taking the place of students' parents, preparing meals and maintain the dormitory environment. Management history systems are also being installed in dormitories. Student dormitories help reduce the worries of parents regarding financial aspects, health and safety. For students, the opportunity to live with other students of the same age makes dormitories a place for irreplaceable experiences.

Universities are not the only institutions focusing on the positive aspects of dormitories. Recently, when hiring new employees, there are corporations which look highly upon students who have lived in dormitories. There are also an increasing number of corporations which require new employees to live in employee dormitories for several years after entering the company. This is most likely due to corporate emphasis on the communication skills, cooperation, autonomy and other qualities which are acquired through communal living with others. Such qualities are the basic social skills required in the global professionals of the future.

Waseda University shows great understanding towards student dormitories. The university has established an RA system and a unique Social Intelligence (SI) Program. Even on a national scale, Waseda University is a pioneer in the advancement of dormitories. Waseda views dormitory management as a part of student services and seeks to cultivate professionals who will perform on a global scale. Through behind-the-scenes support in dormitory operation and maintenance, our company hopes to help Waseda fulfill its philosophy.
