Reflecting on the history of a revolutionary era

Waseda in the Taisho Democracy Era

President Shigenobu Okuma speaking at the 30th anniversary celebration

The year 2013 marked the 100th anniversary of then-President Shigenobu Okuma declaring the Waseda University mission at the celebrations held in October 1913 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of our university. From October 8 to November 4 of 2013, the Waseda University Archives held an autumn exhibition entitled “Waseda in the Taisho Democracy Era” in the 125th anniversary room of the Okuma Memorial Tower to examine the history of Waseda in the “Taisho Democracy” Era from the 1910s to 1920s, when our school’s mission was enacted. In addition to material related to the establishment of the Waseda mission, the exhibition featured the manga Kofu Manga (School Spirit Comics) by cartoonist Ichiro Kondo, who depicted university and school life of students from schools such as Waseda University and Keio University. Also featured was material related to the Military Research Group Incident and Waseda Riots in which the visions of Waseda University were discussed. Overall, the exhibition was a precious opportunity to experience Waseda in the “Taisho Democracy” Era, providing insight into the movements of Waseda University, faculty members and students during that period.
