On November 8, an awards ceremony was held for the 13th “Waseda Journalism Award in Memory of Tanzan Ishibashi.” President Kamata gave a speech and then presented each award-winner with a certificate, commemorative medal and prize money while commending their accomplishments. The Grand Prize was awarded to two winners, while the Incentive Award was given to four winners from two organizations.

“The Grand Prize in the Cultural Contribution Section was awarded to the NHK Educational TV program Norio Nagayama’s 100-Hour Confession—Truth of the suppressed psychiatric test,” explained Akiko Shimoju, a member of the selection committee. “This program left me overwhelmingly shocked at the resonance of confession from the human heart. The Grand Prize in the Grassroots Democracy Section was awarded to the Okinawa Times series entitled Calming the Waves—Viewpoint of the Senkaku Islands. Instead of viewing the Senkaku Islands from the perspective of Japan-China conflict, this touching series faithfully portrays the feelings of local Okinawans.” After Shimojo’s presentation, award-winners discussed their passionate feelings toward their works. The vibrant awards ceremony was attended by approximately 100 people including award-winners, members of news crews that worked intently to provide reporting and coverage, mass media officials and students who seek to become journalists.
