Speech by Uichiro Niwa, former Ambassador to China

Lecture for considering peaceful growth in East Asia

Distinguished guests, foreign students, and faculty and staff attended the special lecture.

A lecture entitled “Seeking Peaceful Growth in East Asia—Recommendations from a New Japan-Taiwan Perspective” was held on July 18th at the Masaru Ibuka Auditorium. Featured speakers were University Professor of Waseda* Uichiro Niwa, former Japanese Ambassador to China, and Mr. Chiang Pin-kung, Chairperson of the Third Wednesday Club and former Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Nationalist Party.

University Professor Niwa discussed the “future of Japan-China relations and the Japanese economy,” while Mr. Pin-kung spoke about Japan-Taiwan economic relations following the ECFA (Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement). The lecture was attended by about 500 students, who listened attentively as the two speakers recommended further economic cooperation in order to realize peace and prosperity in East Asia.
