On April 20th, a joint symposium to commemorate the 5th anniversary of “Tokyo Women’s Medical University – Waseda University Joint Institution for Advanced Biomedical Sciences (TWIns)”, which is the integrated research and education center for medicine, science and engineering under the direction of Tokyo Women’s Medical University and Waseda University, was held with a theme of “future development of integration of health/medicine/science/engineering from TWIns”.

In the symposium, Masuo Aizawa, advisor of Japan Science and Technology Agency, gave a lecture on the meaning of integration of medicine/science/engineering, importance of promoting science and technology innovation in the fierce international competition, and his expectation to TWIns as the leader. The representatives from 4 ministries (i.e. Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) also gave lectures on the future development and their expectations towards realizing the highly advanced medicine.

After the lectures, there were poster sessions and oral presentations and energetic discussions by 9 researchers from the universities, who are continuing research on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses based in TWIns. The symposium had about 300 participants and was highly successful.
