Considering the cultivation of Asia leaders in the global age

Seminar: Japan’s Soft Power in the 21st Century and Concept for Establishment of the East Asian University Institute (EAUI)

Mr. Aoki and Professor Amako engage in discussion

On January 28th, the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies (GSAPS) held the 4th Waseda Global Asia Seminar. In addition to a political and economic approach, the power of culture and academics (soft power) is important for constructing an effective regional collaborative system in East Asia. From December 2011, the GSAPS started the “East Asian University Institute (EAUI) for Asian Regional Integration (Campus Asia-EAUI Program).”

At the seminar, a lecture entitled “Japan’s Soft Power in the 21st Century and Concept for Establishment of the East Asian University Institute (EAUI)” was given by Mr. Tamotsu Aoki (Former Commissioner of Agency for Cultural Affairs), who has proposed the “East Asian Collaborative University Institute Concept” for the formation of regional cooperation through the power of culture in East Asian region. Today, the diverse culture in East Asia is being recognized and the issue of an East Asian collective is being reexamined. Mr. Aoki discussed the need to establish a platform of wisdom for cultivating professionals who will promote such trends in East Asia. Following the lecture, a discussion was held between Mr. Aoki and Professor Satoshi Amako (GSAPS) regarding the form of East Asian regional cooperation through soft power.
