International Exchange Through Japanese Culture

Rice-cake pounding event with active sumo wrestlers

Foreign exchange students awkwardly pound rice-cakes

On December 9, the Center for Japanese Language and the International Community Center jointly hosted an annual rice-cake pounding event in the Okuma Garden.

At the rice-cake pounding event, in addition to nine active sumo wrestlers from the Arashio Stable, about 300 students enjoyed making rice-cakes. Exchange students cheered on the loincloth-clad wrestlers who pounded the rice under a cold sky, and tried their hand at pounding the rice-cakes while crying out "Yoisho!" Freshly made rice-cakes and Japanese vegetable chowder was passed around the venue and it was an opportunity to come in contact with both Japanese culture and food.
