Embarking on new paths full of hope

2009 Graduation Ceremony, 2010 Entrance Ceremony

On March 25th, the 2009 academic year graduation ceremony was held for undergraduate schools and the Art and Architecture School. A ceremony was also held to present degrees to students finishing graduate school. The ceremonies marked a new beginning for 12,281 students (see above photograph). Although the day of the ceremonies was marred by rain and extremely cold weather, the Waseda Campus was brightened by the colorful long-sleeved kimono and hakama worn by the graduates, and by the smiles of the graduates and their families.

President Katsuhiko Shirai his speech at the ceremony with the following remark: “Today is not a sad farewell. Rather, it is a farewell full of desire and expectations. All of Waseda’s graduates, faculty and staff possess the DNA of autonomy, independence and enterprise. Today marks the beginning of an eternal bond between us all.” President Shirai’s speech was met with thunderous applause.

Furthermore, on April 1st and 2nd, the 2010 entrance ceremony was held for undergraduate and graduate schools. Our university welcomed 13,771 new students (see picture below). The news students attended the ceremony with a mixture of expectations and uneasiness at their new surroundings, but were encouraged by the following message from President Shirai: “I hope that you will make the most of your potential and will develop the strength to boldly confront a new era and new challenges.”
