"Qualifications as a human being are necessary for leaders."

On November 4th, a special talk event by Mr. George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States of America, was held at Masaru Ibuka Auditorium. The event was entitled "Akihiro 'Ike' Ikuhara and Peter O'Malley Commemorative Sports Management Course & Lecture to Commemorate the Selection of the Global COE Program 'Sport Sciences for the Promotion of Active Life'".

Mr. Bush has also served as joint owner of the Texas Rangers, a Major League Baseball team, and is known for deep knowledge of sports in general. Drawing upon his personal experience, Mr. Bush delivered a lecture on subjects such as know-how for team management. During the Q&A session, Mr. Bush was asked the following question by a student: "The President of America is the leader of the world. What qualities are necessary for leaders?" Mr. Bush gave the following response: "A leader must speak the truth, show principles, and not bend his beliefs in order to gain popularity. Qualifications as a human being are necessary for leaders, even beyond the fields of politics and sports."

At the closing ceremony, Mr. Bush was presented with a baseball jacket bearing the number "43" in reference to his tenure as the 43rd President of the United States of America.
