On October 22nd, the Royal Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Waseda University agreed to promote organizational cooperation with a focus on academic exchange and the cultivation of professionals. A signing ceremony was also held and a memorandum was conducted.

In April of 2006, Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was presented with an Honorary Doctor Degree by Waseda University. In response, President Shirai was invited to visit Saudi Arabia in December of the same year. President Shirai visited institutions of higher learning, research institutions, and government institutions, and his visit helped to construct a relationship between Saudi Arabia and Waseda University. Afterwards, Saudi Arabia was also visited by university officials such as Vice-President Horiguchi, and "Saudi Arabia Kingdom Day" was held at Waseda University in June of 2008.

Furthermore, in September of 2009, the founding ceremony for the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Vice-President Ohta was invited to and attended the ceremony.

There are great expectations for further strengthening of the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Waseda in the areas of academics and research, including partnerships between industry and academia. These expectations also extend to exchanges between professionals held at Waseda University, including scholarship students from Saudi Arabia.
