Christmas decorated with memories of Karajan

Concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Karajan held by the Waseda University Symphony Orchestra

Mr. Gabriel Schwabe, Cellist

On December 20th (Saturday) at Okuma Auditorium, the Waseda University Symphony Orchestra held a concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the late Herbert von Karajan's Birth, a man who was known as the "Caesar of the conductor's podium".

The exchange between Karajan and the Waseda Symphony Orchestra can be traced back to 1978, when the Waseda orchestra won the 5th International Youth Orchestra Competition (commonly referred to as the Karajan Competition). On December 20th of this past year, Gabriel Schwabe, a young cellist from Berlin, made his first visit to Japan and enlivened Christmas at Waseda University.

Also, from February to March of 2009, the Waseda University Symphony Orchestra is holding the 2009 European Tour, which is the 12th overseas performance for the orchestra.
