Professor Hirosuke Kawanishi of the Faculty of Human Sciences received the 14th Annual Academic Award from the Society for the Study of Social Policy for his work “The Rise and Fall of Densan (1946 to 1956) –Densan Wage System and Industry Unions-“ (Waseda University Press, 2007). The Society for the Study of Social Policy was established in 1897 and possesses the longest history and tradition of any scholastic society dealing with humanities in Japan.

The work which received the current award is Professor Kawanishi’s lifework, a culmination of research into the history of Densan (All Japan Electric Workers Union), and the definitive work of Densan research, renowned as the Densan Wage System. The work was evaluated as follows: “This work contains an easy-to-understand depiction of the path taken by Densan, while at the same time offering deeply illuminating research, thus making this research an effort deserving of the academic award of this society.”
