Waseda University and Tsinghua University Joint Japan-China Investigation Design Workshop in the Disaster-hit Area:
Traditional Community Regeneration Focused on the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of Otsuchi Town in Iwate Prefecture
The Waseda University Institute for Research on Reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake/Research Institute for Integrated Approach to Urban Safety and Security with Natural and Cultural Heritage (Representative: Professor Takeshi Nakagawa, Faculty of Science and Engineering) will hold a proposal-based design workshop training course with Waseda University and Tsinghua University in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture in the Tohoku-Sanriku area which suffered damage as a result of the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear power accident. This joint training course has been set up because some graduates of Waseda University went on to the Graduate School of Tsinghua University. Over eight days from April 27 to May 4, approximately 30 students and teachers (includes 8 students in Waseda University and 8 students in Tsinghua University) from both universities will make design proposals for the social and cultural challenges in Otsuchi Town where regional community functions have been lost and the problem of aging is becoming more serious. This will be achieved through a field survey and dialogue with local residents. There is a great deal of cultural heritage in Otsuchi Town, Hanamaki City and Tono City. This workshop training course will aim to come up with design proposals that will promote training for the protection of cultural diversity and dialogue among cultures which takes into account the regeneration of the intangible cultural heritage of Otsuchi Town/Tohoku and the area's relationship with the world.

Design Conditions
Referring to the Otsuchi Town Reconstruction Plan, the participants will share information on prior case study investigation materials collected by each group: 'Cultural heritage spaces such as shrines and festivals,' 'Welfare spaces such as regional comprehensive care and regional public housing' and 'Industrial spaces such as the fisheries industry, agriculture and brewing.' The designs will be made after selecting one or more from the following conditions.
Design Condition 1: A local residents' exchange space design and management plan with the intangible cultural regeneration and traditions centered on festival and Shinto shrine spaces, etc.
Design Condition 2: A local residents' exchange space design and management plan centered on care for the elderly making reference to the regional reconstruction public housing plan and regional comprehensive care plan.
Design Condition 3: A local residents' exchange space design and management plan centered on the fisheries industry, agriculture, brewing, biomass, wind power and IT industry, etc.

Work after the On-site Workshop
Waseda University and Tsinghua University students will group into teams of four and submit a total of four proposals.
