Known for illustrations centering on near-future Akihabara, John Hathway, a Japanese artist and scientist with a master’s degree in applied physics, will present a 20-minute live drawing performance to complete an exquisite and inspiring piece.

This exhibition will showcase a variety of products and works, all symbolizing Akihabara, Tokyo’s epicenter of state-of-the-art and leading-edge electronic engineering and technology. They will be displayed by Akihabara-based electronic workshops, including Robot Kobo Noratelier, run by a freelance robotic engineer, which will exhibit accessories recycling used electronic circuit boards.

Photographs of scenes in and around Akihabara taken by amateur and professional photographers will be electronically shown. Many historical photographs are included. Historian Masaya Takiguchi, who specializes in the history of Edo (now Tokyo), will give a lecture.

Members of the Sougetsukai Akihabara Dojo hall will present live performances of the traditional Japanese martial arts of “Genko nito-ryu,” a two-sword kenjutsu technique used since the early 17th century, and “Isshin-ryu kusarigama-jutsu,” a chain-sickle method developed in the 13th century. Masaru Ganba, a “nunchuku” specialist, will also perform the traditional Okinawan martial art using two sticks connected at each end by a short cord or a metal chain.

Looking for unique and funny-looking but quite useful personal computer-related goods? They are readily and abundantly available in Akihabara. Representatives of the town’s leading stores handling such goods will introduce the latest popular products.

The event will have a tented exhibition booth offering concise yet rich-in-content opportunities for advanced virtual reality experiences and purchasing Akihabara’s select specialty goods.

Experience mini photo rogaining, requiring about an hour, and get souvenirs!
In a photo rogaining competition, you get points as you photograph scenes of your choice at each checkpoint. On Jan. 27, two programs will be held in Akihabara, Tokyo. One is a pre-registered event with checkpoints over a wide area in Tokyo. Registration for this event has already closed. A separate event is planned for the day for visitors to Akihabara wanting to experience photo regaining, requiring about an hour to visit the checkpoints.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is making efforts to establish a new Tokyo brand that will help build a stronger impression of Tokyo as a tourist destination. The upcoming event is part of the Tokyo Brand Promotion Campaign, a new initiative to effectively utilize the new Tokyo brand logo of “& Tokyo” to spread the city’s attractions far and wide.
Tokyo is one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, promising “all kinds of fun by constantly generating new styles while bringing tradition and innovation together.” The Tokyo Metropolitan Government summarizes the unique attractions of Tokyo into five key values. It is “unique” in fusing tradition and advanced culture and “excellent” in creating quality development by enhancing innovation and sophistication, while it is “exciting” to experience the dynamism and energy of Tokyo, “delightful” to see the area full of the spirit of omotenashi (hospitality) among its sincere and kind residents and “comfortable” to experience Tokyo’s safety, clockwork precision and convenience.
